[Transcript] Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth! It is Monday, August 26. Ready for news?
Tropical Storm Dorian
There is a tropical storm named Dorian that is moving northwest through the Caribbean with 60 mph winds. It is on course to hit Barbados tomorrow (Tuesday) and possibly Puerto Rico on Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center said Dorian is expected to intensify into near hurricane strength by tomorrow, and could be a hurricane on Wednesday if winds reach 74 mph.
Forecast maps show Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and Florida in Dorian’s path.
There are people in Puerto Rico that are lining up at stores to stock up on supplies. The island is still recovering from the Hurricane Maria in 2017.
The National Weather Service said it is too early to speculate if Dorian will impact Florida.
The hurricane season has already started and will end November 30.
In separate but related news, Axios reported that President Trump thinks it’d be a good idea to drop a nuclear bomb in the eye of a hurricane to disrupt it.
Trump tweeted today that it was fake news.
The NOAA explained in a fact sheet that a nuclear bomb might not even affect a hurricane and would cause a disaster because the radioactive fallout would move with the tradewinds to affect land areas and cause devastating environmental problems.
Andrew Luck retires
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck shocked the sporting world on Saturday night when he announced he was retiring from the NFL at age 29.
He said he is retiring because he has been in a cycle of injury, pain, and rehab. He said he feels stuck in it and that the only way out is to no longer play football.
Luck was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2012. He has played very well when he is healthy, but he has missed numerous games, including the entire 2017 season, due to injuries in his throwing shoulder, a lacerated kidney, torn cartilage in his ribs, and a concussion. He was recently struggling with an ankle injury.
Colts owner Jim Isray said Luck’s retirement meant he was walking away from potential earnings of half a billion dollars. He seemed to have hope that Luck would come back, saying that Michael Jordan retired and unretired twice.
In separate but related news, former NFL fullback Le’Ron McClain asked the NFL to help him with his head injuries. He tweeted on Saturday that his brain is f—— tired, that it was dark times, and that he had to get lawyers.
Some are concerned that he might have CTE, a very serious brain disease that is caused by repeated head injuries.
President Trump at G-7
President Trump was in France for the G-7 summit, a meeting with leaders of seven of the world’s top economies.
Trump said there is a possibility of a trade deal with China and that the Chinese President Xi Jinping is a brilliant man. He said it was possible that he would delay or cancel planned tariffs. This was a softer tone than what Trump had a few days earlier, where he said he might move to force U.S. companies to stop their working relationship with Chinese businesses. The DOW Jones went up over 200 points today.
French President Emmanuel Macron emerged as a mediator between the U.S. and Iran. He is trying to set up talks between the two countries that could result in a new economic and nuclear deal. Trump said he is open to it if the circumstances were correct or right. Macron surprised the G-7 by inviting a top Iranian official, but he did not meet with U.S. representatives.
Trump skipped a meeting that focused on climate, biodiversity, and oceans. Six leaders were there, but Trump’s seat was empty. The G-7 leaders agreed on a $20 million package to help Amazon countries fight fires and to restore rainforests. Trump later said he wants to focus on U.S.’s wealth from its energy production, not on dreams or windmills. He said he is an environmentalist and that he thinks he knows more about the environment than most people and that he wants clean air, clean water, and a wealthy country.
The U.S. will host next year’s G-7 summit, and Trump has suggested the venue be at his golf resort in Doral, Florida. There was criticism that this was not appropriate. Trump said he won’t make any money from it and that the club was in a good location.
