Five in U.S. infected with monkeypox

At least five people in the U.S. have a monkeypox infection. The World Health Organization (WHO) said there are about 200 confirmed cases across Europe and North America.

The CDC said many of the people affected globally are men who identify as gay or bisexual with the virus spreading through sexual contact.

Health officials made it clear that monkeypox is not a sexually transmitted disease and that anyone can get monkeypox if there is close contact with an infected person or by touching materials with the virus on it.

Monkeypox causes flu-like symptoms at the beginning and then progresses into body rashes and blisters all over the body. Most people recover in two to four weeks.

The CDC said monkeypox is not like Covid-19 in the sense that it spreads quickly and easily through the air. The CDC has started a process to release some vaccines from its national stockpile to help those who may have been exposed to monkeypox. The vaccine for smallpox may be effective in preventing infection.

WHO said it will host a global meeting on the virus next week to study the risks and treatments available.

In 2003, the U.S. had an outbreak of monkeypox cases -- 70 cases -- that came from people keeping infected prairie dogs as pets.

Mexico shooting leaves 11 dead and 5 wounded

In Mexico, in the city of Celaya, northwest of Mexico City, a shooting massacre happened at a hotel and two bars that left eleven people dead and five people injured. This happened last night around 10pm on their local time.

Witnesses say that a group of hooded and armed men, about 15 of them, arrived with two trucks. They began shooting and then threw homemade bombs that burned two businesses nearby before they left.

The night before, three dismembered bodies were found in plastic bags with a note of warning on a cardboard box.

Telemundo 52 news mentioned that it is not clear who is behind the attack and authorities are now investigating.

United Airlines worker fired after viral video of brawl

There is a viral video of a United Airlines male employee fighting with a passenger at the luggage check-in area of the Newark Liberty International Airport.

The passenger is a former NFL player named Brendan Langley, who currently plays in the Canadian Football League.

The video shows both men shoving, slapping, and punching each other. At one point Langley threw a punch that sent the United employee falling near the luggage conveyor belt.

The brawl may have started from an argument because Langley used a wheelchair to bring a piece of luggage.

News reports said Langley was arrested and charged with simple assault while the United worker was fired. It's not known why the United worker wasn't arrested.

Airbnb removing rentals listing in China

Airbnb will be removing all domestic rentals in China from the company’s website this summer. The reason for this is because China has a “zero-Covid” policy which means the lockdown is still ongoing. This has made it difficult for renting places in China.

For the last few years, China has made up only 1% of AirBnB’s revenue. One source in the article mentioned that even before the pandemic, it was complicated and expensive to operate domestic rentals for travelers visiting China.

Now, Airbnb mentioned that they will shift their focus to supporting people from China that want to travel abroad to other destinations.

New York City removes the last payphone

How many of you remember payphones- the rectangular booth that has a black phone with a metal wire connected inside? New York City just removed its last payphone booth in the city. They began removing them one by one since 2015. Now, instead of payphones, they are replacing them with booths that offer free phone calls, wifi, and device charging.

The NYC Commissioner mentioned that we have changed from horse and buggy to this digital evolution and there is a greater demand for daily communication needs. Personally, I do wonder how many payphones are left here in America.

That’s all for now! See you tomorrow and stay with the light!
