19 elementary students and two teachers killed by gunman
On Tuesday just before noon, an 18-year-old gunman entered the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and killed at least 19 children and two teachers.
It is the worst school shooting in Texas history and the worst in the U.S. since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.
The children who died were in grades 2, 3, and 4 and were between the ages of seven and 10. It was the elementary school’s last week of classes before the summer break. The victims were rushed to a hospital and news reporters said they saw hospital staff and relatives weeping.
Some of the victims’ identities have been released by news reporters or family members. They include 10-year-old Uziyah Garcia, 10-year-old Xavier Lopez, and 10-year-old Nevaeh Bravo. We will see more names and pictures of victims in the coming days.
One of the two teachers’ names was Eva Mireles, who taught in the fourth grade.
The gunman’s name is Salvador Ramos. He was a resident of Uvalde and went to Uvalde High School. He purchased two rifles on his 18th birthday.
On Tuesday, he shot his grandmother and then drove his truck to the school and crashed it before walking into the school and opening fire.
A police officer at the school tried to stop Ramos, but he was shot. A Border Patrol agent who happened to be working near the school rushed to the school and shot and killed Ramos.
President Biden gave an address from the White House on Tuesday night. He called on Congress to take some action to stop gun violence and to stand up to the gun industry. Biden said it is wrong that an “18-year-old can just walk into a gun store and buy two assault-style weapons.”
It is a very tragic incident for Uvalde, which is a small Latino-majority city with 16,000 residents.
