It is April 10. Here are today’s top stories.

Bodycam footage shows Chicago police fired nearly 100 shots during fatal traffic stop

According to a graphic video footage Chicago Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released Tuesday, plainclothes Chicago police officers fired 96 gunshots during a traffic stop that left one man dead and one officer injured.

Five officers from a tactical unit who were in an unmarked police vehicle surrounded an SUV last month on March 21 driven by Dexter Reed, allegedly for failing to wear a seatbelt. Video shows the 26-year-old Black man briefly lowering a window and then raising it and refusing to exit the vehicle as more officers arrived, yelled commands and drew weapons.

COPA said video footage confirmed that Reed fired first, injuring an officer. Then four officers returned fire, shooting approximately 96 rounds over 41 seconds.

The gunshots continued even after Reed exited his vehicle and fell to the ground. A gun was later recovered from the vehicle.

Four officers were placed on 30 days of administrative leave. Reed’s family is demanding criminal charges against the officers.

Arizona Supreme Court upholds near-total abortion ban

The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban is enforceable, a bombshell decision that adds the state to the growing lists of places where abortion care is effectively banned.

The ruling allows an 1864 law in Arizona to stand that made abortion a felony punishable by two to five years in prison for anyone who performs one or helps a woman obtain one.

The decision sent shockwaves through the reproductive rights community in Arizona and nationally.

Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, said moments after the ruling that she would not enforce the law.

The abortion issue could soon be in the hands of voters. Abortion rights groups in the state are likely to succeed in their goal of putting a proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot.

If voters approved the ballot measure, it would effectively undo the 1864 ban that now remains law in the state.

Abigail Zwerner shooting: assistant principal charged with felony child neglect

A former assistant principal at a Virginia elementary school has been charged with felony child neglect Tuesday, more than a year after a 6-year-old boy brought a gun to class and shot his first-grade teacher.

According to indictments unsealed Tuesday, a special grand jury in Newport News found that former assistant principal Ebony Parker showed a reckless disregard for the lives of Richneck Elementary School students on Jan. 6, 2023.

Parker and other school officials already face a $40 million negligence lawsuit from the teacher who was shot, Abby Zwerner. She accuses Parker and others of ignoring multiple warnings the boy had a gun and was in a violent mood (one’s desire to cause harm and threaten others) the day of the shooting.

According to her lawsuit, Zwerner was sitting at a reading table in front of the class when the boy fired the gun. The bullet struck Zwerner’s hand and then her chest, collapsing one of her lungs. She spent nearly two weeks in the hospital and has endured multiple surgeries as well as ongoing emotional trauma.

Parker, 39, faces eight felony counts, each of which is punishable by up to five years in prison.

What to do with your solar eclipse glasses

Are you wondering what to do with your eclipse glasses now that the April 8 total solar eclipse has come and gone?

You can donate them to underserved communities, so needy folks can watch future eclipses safely.

According to a statement from the organization, the nonprofit group Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) has partnered with libraries, schools, museums, businesses and other organizations across the U.S. and Canada to collect and recycle gently used eclipse-viewing glasses. The glasses will be sent to underserved communities and schools around the world to use during future solar eclipses.

Glasses, contact lenses and sunglasses retailer Warby Parker is also partnering with AWB to collect undamaged solar eclipse glasses at its stores until April 30.

The next total solar eclipse will occur on Aug. 12, 2026, and will be visible in Spain, Iceland, Greenland and part of Portugal.

Donald De La Haye, viral kicker known as 'Deestroying,' fractures neck in UFL game

Thanks, Callie.

A professional football kicker named Donald De La Haye, who is also an internet star under the name of “Deestroying,” sustained a broken neck when he made a tackle after kicking off during his second game in the United Football League (UFL).

De La Haye posted on Instagram an image of himself with a neck brace and said he fractured his neck in a couple of places due to tackling with a bad form.

USAToday explained that De La Haye was a kicker for the University of Central Florida from 2016-17 and was a popular YouTuber and made money. But he had to stop making videos because it was the pre-NIL era — college athletes couldn’t make money back then.

He didn’t want to stop making videos and left college football and posted viral videos of his abilities. He had hoped to play for the NFL. In 2019, he played briefly in the Canadian Football League.

Then the UFL started play this year and De La Haye was signed with the San Antonio Brahmas. He got a lot of attention but unfortunately, his season has ended due to the injury.

Thanks for that story. That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light!
