Wednesday, April 28 top stories

It is Wednesday, April 28. Here are today’s top stories.

News reports said Rudy Giuliani’s home in Manhattan was searched by federal investigators as a part of a criminal investigation on his business dealings with Ukraine. The investigators seized Giuliani’s electronic devices and also searched his office.

Giuliani’s attorney said what the investigators did was “legal thuggery” and criticized doing this against a (former) NYC mayor and “personal lawyer to the 45th president of the United States.”

The New York Times said Giuliani is under suspicion of illegally working between powerful Ukrainian figures and the Trump administration in 2019.

One of the jurors in the Derek Chauvin trial, Brandon Mitchell, did an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America.

He said the deliberations to convict Chauvin were quick and that the only reasons why the jury didn’t act quicker was because they wanted to be sure to follow the judge’s instructions.

Mitchell said there was a lot of stress during the trial because they watched someone die on a daily basis. He said the videos of the arrest and Dr. Tobin’s testimony about how George Floyd’s neck was compressed was very impactful.

He said it was a negative thing for Chauvin that he didn’t testify because the jurors were never able to hear from him on what his thoughts were.

Mitchell said George Floyd’s name is going to live on and that his legacy is cemented in history, but that the negative thing is that he died.

President Joe Biden will give an address to a joint session of Congress — similar to a State of the Union address — in which he will explain his vision of how to address the coronavirus pandemic and recover the U.S. economy. It won’t be a full house, though, because only 200 people can attend Biden’s speech in person.

President Biden’s official @POTUS Twitter account announced that the White House will livestream the address with ASL interpretation “for the first time in history.” The links to watch it are in the transcript.

Here are four updates on the Andrew Brown Jr. case in North Carolina. He was shot and killed by Pasquotank County Sheriff’s deputies who were serving an arrest warrant.

A judge declined to allow body camera footage of police officers shooting and killing Brown be released to the public, citing concerns of affecting the fairness of the judicial process. The judge said Brown’s family would be allowed to view the videos within 10 days, but the faces and name tags of the deputies would be blurred. Attorneys for Brown’s family criticized the decision, saying releases of video is key to accountability.

The second update — a video from a neighbor of Brown showed what police officers looked like prior to arriving at Brown’s home.

I can see at least seven police officers in full combat / SWAT gear on that truck, and at the end of the video, they rush off the truck right after pulling up on a driveway.

The third update — the local District Attorney revealed that Brown’s car was seen in videos moving backwards and forward and making contact with police officers. The DA said the officers opened fire after the car made contact with them.

The fourth update — the FBI announced it is opening a federal civil rights investigation in the shooting death.

A reporter for the New York Post, Laura Italiano, announced on Tuesday she is resigning because she wrote an incorrect story about Kamala Harris and migrant children.

The story claimed the Biden administration was using taxpayer money to order many copies of Kamala Harris’ children book, “Superheroes Are Everywhere” so they could distribute it to migrant children at the California border as a part of a “welcome kit.

But the story was not true. The Washington Post reported that local officials at a shelter in southern California said there was only one copy of Kamala’s book at the shelter and that it was there because it was collected as a part of a citywide donation drive where people donated only new books. It seems like someone decided to buy Kamala’s book and donate it.

The reporter admitted she failed to push back hard enough against orders to write the story. She said this incident was her breaking point which led to her resignation.

That is all the top stories for today. Check out our other videos. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
