1.1 Hurricane Ian tracks toward Florida

Hurricane Ian, which is located south of Cuba, became a hurricane this morning. It currently has sustained wind speeds of 80 mph and is expected to intensify into a Category 2 or 3 storm by tonight.

Forecast paths say Ian could hit western Cuba on Tuesday morning before moving up to Florida’s west coast with the potential to make landfall in the Tampa area between Wednesday and Thursday as a very dangerous Category 4 hurricane.

Schools in the Tampa area and other areas in southwest Florida are closing down for the week. Many Florida officials are urging residents to start preparing now for a big storm and power blackouts. 7,000 National Guard soldiers have been activated to assist with the storm response.

Fiona causes severe damage to Canada’s Atlantic coast

On Friday, Hurricane Fiona weakened to a post-tropical cyclone before it made landfall on the southern coast of Newfoundland, but the storm was powerful enough to cause huge waves and hurricane-strength winds. Multiple homes and structures were washed into the sea.

The city of Channel-Port Aux Basques was one of the hardest-hit areas. The body of a 73-year-old woman was found in the water. Authorities said she was in a home that was struck by a wave that tore away a portion of the basement. Another woman was rescued after she was thrown into the ocean after her home collapsed.

There was also damage to Canada’s provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Russia school shooting

Today in the western Russian city of Izhevsk, a gunman who wore clothing with Nazi symbols on it carried out a mass shooting at a school, killing 11 children and four adults — two security guards and two teachers.

CNN said this is at least the third school shooting in Russia or territory controlled by the country in the past two years.
