Deaf News Briefs: WFD & “Encanto”

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

WFD marks International Day of Sign Languages

The World Federation of the Deaf is marking the International Day of Sign Languages today September 23. WFD President Dr. Joseph Murray is at the UN office in Geneva, Switzerland, and posted a video showing banners and interactive displays showing people around the world celebrating sign language.

The WFD’s Twitter feed is full of world leaders recognizing the day with officials from the Kurdistan region, Belgium, Haiti, Norway, Ecuador, Zambia, Rwanda, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Slovakia, Botswana, Chile, Germany, Albania, Canada, and other countries.

The WFD showed an image of UN’s Geneva office being illuminated in blue light to mark the International Day of Sign Languages. Several public buildings in Japan were also illuminated with blue light. One building in Okayama, Japan had a blue spotlight projected on a building that marked “International Day of Sign Languages.”

Disney & Deaf West release “Encanto” music video

The second news brief is about a new music video in sign language released by Disney Music Group that was done in partnership with Deaf West Theatre of the popular song, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from the film, “Encanto.”

A press release said the video features an “all-Deaf Colombian and Latinx cast” that “utilizes both ASL and Colombian Sign Language…” You can check out the video in the link in the transcript.
