Monday, November 23 top news briefs

Hello, it is Monday, November 23. Here are today’s top news briefs.

On Friday afternoon in Milwaukee, there was a mass shooting at Mayfair Mall. 8 people were shot, but none received life-threatening wounds. On Sunday the Wauwatosa Police Department announced they arrested a 15-year-old suspect, a Hispanic male. Police said there was an altercation that caused the shooting to break out. Police said the victims were at Macy’s store.

There were over 195,000 new Covid-19 cases on Friday in the U.S., which is a new record. There have been about 1,300 deaths a day. The infections are likely to continue to climb because there may be about 50 million people traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The University of Oxford said a Covid-19 vaccine that they have developed with AstraZeneca is 70.4% effective. The vaccine is not as effective as Pfizer or Moderna’s 95% rates, but it is cheaper to make and can be stored in a regular refrigerator, while Pfizer’s vaccine requires it to be stored at about -100 degrees F. Oxford said the vaccine can be up to 90% effective if people receive two doses.

The UNICEF said they would coordinate to ship about 2 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines to poor, developing countries. They will be working with over 350 airlines and freight companies. There was a G20 summit last weekend — a meeting of the 20 biggest world economies in the world — and leaders made a commitment that there would be a fair distribution of vaccines. It is likely that countries that are more remote or do not have advanced infrastructures will use the Oxford vaccine since it can be stored in a regular refrigerator.
