It is March 22. Here are today’s top stories.

Student shoots 2 staff at Denver high school

This morning in Denver, a student shot and wounded two school administrators at East High School and then fled the scene. There is a search for the suspect, who is a male student who is under 18 years old. The shooting happened at about 9:50 a.m. First responders found two adult men with gunshot wounds. One of them is now in stable condition, but the second is in critical condition.

Police said the suspected shooter was under a school safety plan in which he was patted down each day. During a search this morning, staff found a handgun and several shots were fired in an office area in front of the school. The shooter escaped and may have taken the gun with him because authorities didn’t find a gun at the scene.

Police said they know who the suspect is but is not identifying him because he is a juvenile.

Denver Mayor Hancock said the suspect is an African American teenager with an afro and wearing a hoodie with an astronaut on it. He vowed to find that suspect and hold him accountable.

Tainted eye drops blamed on eyeball removals, deaths

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said there is an outbreak linked to contaminated eye drops that have caused at least three deaths, eight people to become blind, and four people to have their eyeballs surgically removed.

ABC News said more than 10 different brands of artificial tears have been recalled and that most cases have been linked to EzriCare and Delsam Pharma eye drops, which were made by India-based Global Pharma Healthcare.

The eye drops were contaminated with a dangerous type of bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is resistant to antibiotics.

The FDA and CDC have urged the public and healthcare personnel to not buy EzriCare Artificial Tears or Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears. The CDC said if anyone has symptoms of an eye infection and used either product, they should seek medical care immediately.

Updates with Trump’s legal troubles

Here are two updates on Donald Trump’s legal troubles.

The grand jury in Manhattan who is looking at Trump’s role in the hush money payment case did not meet today as expected. News reports said the grand jurors were told they were not needed but to be prepared to reconvene tomorrow to hear from at least one additional witness. Trump said over the weekend that he expected to be arrested on Tuesday, but so far, the grand jury is still working on the case, which is led by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg. There is a heavy NYPD presence around the courthouse.

The second update is on the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case. ABC News said a federal judge said prosecutors from special counsel Jack Smith’s office have presented strong evidence that Trump knowingly misled his own attorneys about his handling of classified materials after he left the White House. This would have an impact on the case because it could take away Trump’s attorneys’ ability to invoke attorney-client privileges.

The judge ordered Trump’s attorney Evan Corcoran to provide testimony on certain questions that he previously declined to respond to because of attorney-client privilege. The judge said prosecutors showed that Trump appears to have committed crimes, but they would have to meet a higher standard of evidence to seek charges against him.

A Trump spokesperson said “Fake News ABC” should be shamed for broadcasting this information.

Colorado cougar claws at swimming tourist’s head

A couple who was swimming in a hot spring-fed pool at nighttime at a vacation rental home in central Colorado were approached by a mountain lion on Saturday. The couple thought it was a dog at first. The cougar pawed at a man’s head and then flexed its claws, scratching his head. The couple splashed water and shined a flashlight at the cougar, making it move away. The couple went back into the house.

A local wildlife worker said the scratches were pretty serious but the man did not seek medical attention. The worker thinks the cougar may have been following deer who were in the area. The cougar may have thought the man’s head was some sort of animal and didn’t realize it was a human.

Security guards prevent potential mass shooting

Police in Tampa, Florida said security guards stopped a man who was wearing a “devil mask” and carrying a gun from entering a strip club and that it prevented a potential mass shooting.

Surveillance video shows that on early Sunday morning, the suspect was carrying a lit flashlight and a handgun and was about to walk into the front doors.

A security guard named Manuel Resto said he thought, “OK, it’s not Halloween.” He then saw the man’s gun and reacted by grabbing it. The two fought and the gun went off, shooting into the front door. The gun then fell to the floor and the security guard was able to grab it. Two more security guards came out and all were able to pin the suspect down.

The suspect was then arrested by police officers. His name is Michael Rudman. Police said the gun was fully loaded and that he had two fully loaded magazines in his pocket. There were about 200 people inside the club.

Tampa’s police chief said there’s no question in his mind that they would have been discussing a mass shooting if not for the brave actions of the security guards.

Rudman is now in jail without a bond. He is charged with at least two felonies and is also charged with possessing a firearm while under a risk protection order (RPO).

Sailboat sinks after striking whale

On March 13, four people who were sailing on a 44-foot sailboat in the Pacific Ocean hit a whale. The boat’s back half lifted upward and violently came down, damaging the vessel. The four sent out emergency messages requesting help and got into a lifeboat before the sailboat sank in 15 minutes. The four floated for about 10 hours before they were rescued by another ship.

The Washington Post compared the incident with the famous story, “Moby Dick.” The four believe the whale was a Bryde's whale that was as big as the sailboat.

That’s all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
