There will be English supertitles on screen for both the ASL performances and the voiced songs.

An information sheet said the play “tells the story of love and loss through the ages seen through the classic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, and an original, modern tale of a newly married Deaf couple facing difficult decisions as disease enters their lives.”

The script was translated into ASL by Willy Conley, who is a Deaf director, actor, and long-time theater professor at Gallaudet University. The English poetry was translated into ASL poetry by Maucere and Zion.

Alex Lev is one of the play’s co-directors. Lev is hearing and fluent in ASL and worked with Maucere and Zion in the silent film, “What?”

So if you’re in the Virginia / Maryland / D.C. area, maybe you can grab the opportunity to watch this performance. For more information, go to www.victoryhallopera.org.

[Advertisement from Deaf Law Center]:

Announcing the New York Adult Survivors Act: Many survivors of sexual assault need time to process the hurt they’ve experienced; it might take years or even decades for a survivor to tell someone what happened to them. For years, our laws were out of step with that reality. Because of that, many survivors lost the opportunity to hold the person who hurt them accountable in court. Now, those survivors are getting a fighting chance. The Adult Survivors Act is a New York State law that creates a one-time, one-year look back window for adult sexual assault survivors who are outside the statute of limitations. That means that any adult survivor – no matter when they were assaulted and even if they are outside the statute of limitations – can file a civil case against their abuser or the institution that protected them, through November 24, 2023.

Texas School for the Deaf announces two deaf finalists for superintendent position

The Texas School for the Deaf’s Governing Board announced on Friday that it interviewed two finalists for the next TSD Superintendent. Both are deaf. They are Peter Bailey, who is the superintendent of the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and Stella Egbert, who is the director of instruction at TSD.

The board announced that they would be hosting “meet and greets” with both finalists next week. You can find more information on TSD’s Facebook page. The board said it intends to make their final decision by April 15, 2023.

TSD’s current superintendent, Claire Bugen, announced in August that she would be retiring after 25 years as superintendent.
