It is Wednesday, November 25. Here are today’s top news and political news briefs.

Diego Maradona, who is one of the world’s greatest soccer players, passed away today. He was 60 and had recent surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain and died of heart failure. Maradona is an Argentine and led his team to win the FIFA World Cup in 1986. The Argentine President Alberto Fernandez tweeted that Maradona took them to the top of the world and that they will miss him.

A EF-2 tornado hit Arlington, Texas on Tuesday night with 115 mph winds. Several apartment complexes were damaged and 75 families lost their homes. Fortunately there were no fatalities, but three people were hospitalized with minor injuries.

In Massachusetts, a 71-year-old man was arrested and accused of telling two female hikers who weren’t wearing a mask that he had Covid-19 before spitting on them. His name is Hale Powell and he was charged with a “false threat of a biological agent” and assault. He has pleaded not guilty and was ordered by authorities to get a coronavirus test and quarantine for 14 days. CNN explained that Massachusetts currently requires all people in public areas to wear masks, even if they are over six feet away. So the man was angry and made threats and was arrested.

On Tuesday, there were 2,216 new deaths from Covid-19 and 178,200 new cases of Covid-19. We’re still in a spike.

Ford has ordered 12 special freezers that can keep Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine at their required low temperatures of about -100 F so the company can provide the vaccines to their employees. Reuters reported that the special freezers can cost between $5,000 to $15,000 each. There are several U.S. states and cities who are ordering special freezers, and the companies that make the freezers said there may be a months-long wait before they can ship out the units.

China’s President Xi Jinping called President-elect Joe Biden to congratulate him on his election victory. Axios reported that Biden will have to figure out what to do about tariffs that the Trump administration imposed on China. Axios also said that the leaders of Brazil, Mexico, and Russia has not yet personally congratulated Biden, because of the U.S. election controversy.

President Trump tweeted today that the election was rigged.


Trump announced this afternoon that he is pardoning his former national security adviser Michael Flynn. He pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with a Russian ambassador in the time between the 2016 election and Trump’s inauguration. Flynn later said he wanted to withdraw his guilty plea because he was entrapped by federal investigators. There were several legal moves back and forth between federal judges and the Trump administration, but now Flynn is pardoned.

Joe Biden said in an interview with NBC News that his transition team is working with the Trump administration and that he is able to get his presidential daily briefs and has plans to meet with the White House Covid team to work on a vaccine distribution plan.

Biden said the outreach from the Trump administration has been sincere and not begrudging. However, Biden said he has not spoken with Trump since the election.

Biden said that two of his goals for his first 100 days is to get immigration reform passed through Congress and to provide Covid-19 relief.
