Military training accident update

This recent Monday, Alex covered a news brief related with a military training accident. Eight Marines and One Navy Corpsman were in an amphibious assault vehicle (AAV) and it sank on Thursday. An AAV is the kind of craft that can transport on water, underwater, and on land.

Yesterday, the remains of 9 of them were found and they were still in the AAV. They still had their combat gears on. The age range of the group was from 19 years old to 23 years old.

This happened off the Southern California coast. It seems that they were trying to get back to their ship from the coast, but the vehicle sank.. Undersea Rescue Command found them (385 feet under water) with remotely-operated video systems.

The reason for the vehicle to sink has not been determined yet.

Aurora Police Department apologizes after drawing weapons on a Black family

Last Sunday, in Aurora, Colorado, the police pulled out guns and arrested a Black woman and 4 children.

A video of the Aurora police officers detaining Brittney Gilliam with her daughter (6),  sister (12), and two nieces (14 and 17) was posted by witnesses and caused an outrage.

The family was going to a nail salon, but found it to be closed. As they were returning to their car, the police approached them with guns drawn. In the video it shows all of the 4 girls lying face down in the parking lot.

This arrest ended up becoming a mistake because the police said that their car’s license plate had matched the number of a stolen vehicle, but from a different state. Also, what added to the misunderstanding was that Brittney’s car was reported stolen earlier in the year.

The Aurora Chief of Police Vanessa Wilson issued an apology for what happened. Wilson said the police are trained to draw their weapons and order people to exit the car and lie prone to the ground. Wilson mentioned that she has directed her team to look at new practices and training.

The Aurora Police Department have reached out to the family and offered to help with therapy.

This is not the first time that the Aurora Police Department has faced criticism. In August 2019, there were criticisms about the death of Elijah McClain.

New York City sets up quarantine checkpoints

New York City is setting up quarantine checkpoints at the “key entry” points along main bridges and tunnels to the city for travelers coming from more than 30 states with bad COVID outbreaks.

Travelers will be required to be safely separate  for two weeks before exploring New York City. Dr. Ted Long, the head of New York City’s Test and Trace Corps mentioned that the city will help the travelers during quarantining with free food deliveries, assistance with medications, Telehealth services, etc.

The city has partnered up with hotels, train, bus, and car rental companies to require anyone who booked a stay in New York City to fill out a travel form so the Test & Trace can locate the travelers and monitor them.

People who violate the state’s order will be fined $2,000 for the first violation and up to $10,000 if they cause harm.
