Tuesday, June 23 top news briefs

Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth! It is Tuesday, June 23. Ready for top news briefs?

In San Jose, California, police said they are looking for a female in her 60’s who purposefully coughed on a baby in a restaurant after an argument over social distancing. The incident was about two weeks ago at a Yogurtland restaurant. ABC News said the 60-year-old suspect was standing in a line in front of a mother with her 1-year-old child who was in a stroller. The woman became upset because the mother and child was “too close” to her, removed her face mask, and coughed close to the baby’s face two or three times. The mother said she believes it is racist because she and her family are Hispanic/Latino and that the woman started yelling at them when they spoke in Spanish. The mother said she hopes her baby doesn’t get the coronavirus. San Jose police is asking for the public’s help.

Two young men were arrested in Oregon on suspicion of killing seven people in Alabama during the first week of June. CNN explained that six adults and a child were found shot to death in a home that was burning. The two men are part of a club called “Seven Deadly Sins” and the murders seemed to be over a dispute within the club. Law enforcement in Alabama and Oregon worked with the FBI to track the two men and arrested them during a traffic stop without incident. The two men’s names are John M. Legg (19) and Frederick A. Rogers (22).

News reports say the European Union is preparing to ban Americans from traveling into the EU when they reopen their borders on July 1. The EU might also bar travelers from Russia and Brazil. It feels like a reversal in events from March, because President Donald Trump announced a ban on most EU citizens traveling to the U.S. Today, Covid-19 cases continue to go up in the U.S. while the EU has the virus under control.

There have been news reports of statues toppled and being torn down, either by people or professionals, of Confederate figures, those tied with slavery or cruel acts against Native Americans, in the midst of protests for racial justice. Last night protesters tried to topple a statue of Andrew Jackson near the White House. Riot police used chemical irritants to disperse the crowd. The statue is still standing, but vandalized. President Trump tweeted a warning that anyone who vandalizes or destroys a monument on federal property in the U.S. would face up to 10 years in prison. He said he has authorized the federal government to arrest anyone either in the immediate future or retroactively.

In southern Mexico, there was a very strong, 7.4 magnitude earthquake. CBS News said one person died from a collapsed building, that buildings in Mexico City swayed, and several buildings were damaged.

Ron Jeremy, an adult film actor, was charged with three counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in Los Angeles. He is accused of assaulting four different women ages 25 to 46, either in his home or at a bar in West Hollywood, in incidents from 2014 to 2019. If Jeremy is convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 90 years to life.

The Hubble Space Telescope (I mean to use this sign) took a photograph of this beautiful planetary nebula. It is an expanding shell of gas that come from a dying red giant star. This one, NGC 7027, shows gases that come from two stars. That’s out there in space.

I want to add a news story that just broke. The FBI said they have concluded their investigation of NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace and the noose that was found in his racing garage on Sunday. It raised concerns of racism and hate crimes because Bubba Wallace is the only Black driver in the NASCAR’s top racing level and he recently spoke out against Confederate flags, which the NASCAR has banned. It seemed like a related thing with the noose. The FBI said 15 agents worked on the case, did interviews, and reviewed footage. They said the noose was already there since the fall and that there was no way to intentionally place Bubba Wallace in that particular garage, that the rope was already there, maybe for a garage door function. So the investigation will end with no accusations or charges of hate crimes. It seems like it’s resolved and closed. So that’s the update on this situation.

That’s all for today. Thank you for watching “The Daily Moth.” Stay with the light!
