Half Moon Bay shooting kills 7

On Monday night, a gunman killed 7 people in two shootings in Half Moon Bay, California. The shootings happened at two separate plant nurseries. Four people were killed in the first location and three people were killed in the second location.

The suspect, 66-year-old Chunli Zhao, was arrested in the parking lot of a sheriff’s office substation about two hours after the first shooting. Police believe that the shooter acted alone. The victims were Chinese and Latino farmworkers. Police believe that the shooter may have been a disgruntled worker. Zhao had legal ownership of a gun.

Police said the shooting happened in a big rural location where people were both living and working and that some children witnessed the shooting.

It is the second mass shooting to hit California in three days with the first being the shooting at a dance hall in Monterey Park during Lunar New Year celebrations. The death toll for that shooting has increased from 10 to 11.

President Biden said in a statement, “For the second time in recent days, California communities are mourning the loss of loved ones in a senseless act of gun violence.” Biden urged Congress to bring legislation for stronger gun laws, such as a federal assault weapons ban and an increase of the minimum age of purchase for assault weapons to 21.

Classified documents found at Mike Pence’s home

Axios reported that a dozen documents with classified document markings were found in former Vice President Mike Pence’s home in Carmel, Indiana last week. The documents were turned over to the FBI.

Pence is now the third person from the White House who is facing reviews from the Department of Justice for possibly mishandling classified documents with the two others being Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
