Tuesday, April 13 top stories

Hello, welcome to the Daily Moth. It is Tuesday, April 13. Here are today’s top stories.

The FDA recommended the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine to be immediately halted out of concerns of blood clots that showed up in six women within two weeks of receiving their inoculations. The pause is expected to last a few days with health officials to investigate data. So far, almost 7 million J&J vaccine doses have been administered. Another 9 million have been shipped out.

This is the second vaccine to be halted due to concerns with blood clots — the first was the AstraZeneca vaccine being halted in much of Europe. The AstraZeneca vaccines have since then been rolling out again in European countries after health officials said the risk is very low, but blood clots is clearly listed as a potential side effect or risk of receiving the vaccine.

CNN explained that both vaccines (J&J and AstraZeneca) use the same type of vaccine that uses an adenovirus vector.

On Monday in Knoxville, Tennessee, police officers got a call of an armed male at the Austin-East Magnet High School. Officers located the suspect in a bathroom. He was a student. The officers said they ordered him to come out, but he refused. The officers eventually entered the bathroom, and they were fired upon and returned fire. The student was killed and one officer was injured but is expected to recover. There is not much information yet and the situation is under investigation.

Britt Reid, who is the son of Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid, was charged with a felony DWI (driving while intoxicated) in relation to a February 4 crash near the Kansas City NFL training complex in which a 5-year-old girl sustained serious brain injuries. He is out on bond now and faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.

The little girl, Ariel Young, is now unable to speak or walk and is now receiving treatment at home and uses a feeding tube.

The Chiefs team said in a statement that they are praying for Ariel’s healing and are in touch with the family’s representative. Britt was placed on leave after the crash and then let go from the team.

The New Mexico legislature passed a bill to legalize recreational marijuana, and it was signed into law by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Monday. The law will expunge records of people’s past arrests and convictions for minor cannabis-related incidents. The law aims to begin a process to have recreational marijuana shops up and running in a year — by April 2022.

The prosecution in the Derek Chauvin trial rested its case today on Day 11 after calling 38 witnesses and showing many video clips to try and prove that Chauvin’s actions are what killed George Floyd.

On Monday Floyd’s younger brother, Philonise, took the stand to talk about his life and who George was. He said growing up with their siblings, George was a leader and made sure everyone made it to school on time and made very delicious banana mayonnaise sandwiches. He said George was a star athlete who transferred to Texas A&M University to play football. The court showed an image of George as a baby with his mother. The brother became emotional when he expressed that he misses George and their mother, who are both deceased.

The defense attorney began calling its witnesses today and will continue until the end of the week. He is trying to prove that Chavuin followed police training and that Floyd died because he had drugs in his system and other health issues. Judge Peter Cahill said he is expecting closing arguments on Monday and jury deliberations afterwards.

President Joe Biden plans to withdraw all American troops from Afghanistan over the next few months, with the final deadline on September 11. That date will be 20 years after the September 11, 2001 attacks, which is the reason why the U.S. decided to send troops in the first place. The Washington Post said there are 2,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, but the specific number fluctuates.
