Nationwide protests over Breonna Taylor decision; two police officers shot

There were protests on Louisville, Kentucky last night to express outrage over a grand jury not indicting police officers for murder or manslaughter in the shooting of Breonna Taylor. One officer was indicted, but it was for shooting into neighboring apartments. No indictments were related to Breonna Taylor’s death.

Over 120 protesters were arrested. Two Louisville police officers were shot and hospitalized, but is expected to recover. The suspected gunman was arrested and his name is Larynzo Johnson. He was charged with wanton endangerment, the same charge that a Louisville police officer got yesterday.

In Seattle, a police officer was filmed pushing a bike over a person’s neck while he was laying on the street. Another officer was struck in the head with a bat. There were serious clashes at a police building between police and protesters. 13 people were arrested.

In Buffalo, a video shows a pickup truck driving through a group of protesters in front of the City Hall. The suspect was detained.

There were many protests in cities all over the U.S.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) said the officers were justified for shooting into Breonna Taylor’s apartment because they were fired upon first by Taylor’s boyfriend. Top Democrats in Congress said laws were unjust and that Breonna Taylor deserves justice.

Cost of two decades of systemic racism: $16 billion

Citigroup, a banking/investment group, released a study this week to make an estimate on the economic costs of systemic racism in the U.S. over the past 20 years. The study said the figure is about $16 trillion. CBS News did a breakdown — Black workers have lost $113 billion in potential wages because they couldn’t get a college degree, the housing market lost $218 billion in sales because Black applicants couldn’t get loans, and about $13 trillion in business revenue never flowed into the economy because Black entrepreneurs couldn’t access bank loans. A Citigroup official said what this study shows is that the costs of racial inequality is not paid only by underrepresented groups, but us all.

‘Cake Boss’ pastry chef’s hand impaled by metal rod in accident

Buddy Valastro, the chef in TLC’s popular “Cake Boss” show, said he was involved in a terrible accident a few days ago in which his right arm and hand was impaled repeatedly by a malfunctioning bowling pinsetter in his home bowling alley. He posted an image of his cast on Instagram. His spokesperson said a bowling pin was stuck in it and when he tried to release it, his right hand became lodged and compressed in the unit. His two sons had to use a reciprocating saw to cut through a metal rod to free Buddy. He has already done two surgeries and is now at home. He is right-handed so many are hopeful he will make a full recovery so he can continue to bake cakes.
