Thursday August 6 top news briefs

Hello. It is Thursday, August 6. Thank you for your birthday wishes. I’m now 43. I mean 34. Here are some top news briefs.

The U.S. recorded over 52,000 new Covid-19 cases and 1,328 deaths on Wednesday.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine tested positive for the coronavirus just ahead of a planned meeting with President Donald Trump in Cleveland. Trump was lifting off from the Washington area when the test result was announced. The governor will go into a quarantine at his home for 14 days. His office said he does not have symptoms. He is the second governor to become infected, with the first Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt in July.

The NFL is allowing players to opt out of the 2020 NFL season due to concerns with coronavirus. Over 50 players have decided to opt out. Those who are “high risk” for Covid-19 can earn $350,000 while those who are “low risk” can earn $150,000. The regular season is set to kick off on September 10 — without a preseason.

The Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he is not confident that the NFL will make it through a season because of the issues MLB faced since they started to play again. Tomlin said they are working very hard to be careful.

The New York Attorney General Letitia James is suing the National Rifle Association and hopes it will be dissolved because of alleged financial misconduct. The lawsuit says the NRA leadership team used millions of dollars in donations on personal trips, expensive meals, and private jets. The NRA spent $54 million during the 2016 elections, with more than $30 million going towards electing President Donald Trump. The NRA has long been one of the most powerful conservative groups that has always advocated for gun rights, but it has faced financial controversies. So the New York AG is suing. Some feel this is a political action rather than a response to crime. Trump said today that the NRA should move to Texas and that the lawsuit was a terrible thing.

The death toll from the Beirut blast has gone up to 135 people. Over 5,000 were injured. About 300,000 people are at risk of becoming homeless due to the damage. Over 100 people are still missing. ABC News said there are many people on the streets helping out to clean up the glass and shrapnel left behind from the explosion. French President Macron visited the blast site at Beirut today, hugged survivors, and promised to provide support. There were some people who upon seeing Macron, protested for changes in Lebanon’s leadership, alleging corruption.
