Escaped murderer captured in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania State Police said they captured the escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante this morning.

He escaped from a prison on August 31 after he was sentenced to life for stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death.

Police said an aircraft using thermal imaging technology picked up a heat source in South Coventry Township. Officers surrounded the area and a police dog found Cavalcante hiding in thick brush while carrying a rifle he stole from a nearby home. The dog bit him and officers detained him.

An image shows dozens of police officers posing for a group picture with the captured Cavalcante.

A local district attorney said today is a great day in Chester County because their nightmare is finally over and the good guys won.

Child poverty doubled last year

The U.S. Census Bureau said child poverty in the U.S. more than doubled and median household income declined last year when Covid-19 government benefits expired and inflation kept rising.

AP News explained that the federal government, in response to the pandemic, expanded the child tax credit and sent payments. But this expired at the end of 2021.

President Biden said it is congressional Republicans’ fault for failing to extend the expanded child tax credit. Biden said he wants to restore it.

AP said opponents of Biden’s vision said if we extend the credit, it would discourage people from working and that it may cause inflation to rise even more.

Hurricane Lee threatens Maine and Nova Scotia

Hurricane Lee is still a Category 3 storm and has a very large size. It is currently south of Bermuda and moving north-northwest. It is forecast to brush very close to the New England coast on Saturday morning and possibly make landfall in Maine or Nova Scotia early Sunday morning.

Forecasters said the hurricane is likely to become weaker due to cooler waters and other factors, but the hurricane’s size means there will be widespread impacts of wind, rain and coastal flooding.

Libya flooding death toll surpasses 5,100

AP News reported that the massive flooding in eastern Libya has now killed over 5,100 people. That number is expected to rise.

First responders are having a tough time reaching the city of Derna because many local roads have been washed away.

There was a year’s worth of rainfall that fell in 24 hours and two nearby dams collapsed, which caused floodwaters to rush through the city center. Some waves were as high as 23 feet.

A UN agency said at least 30,000 people in Derna are now displaced due to the flooding.

AP said the country has been divided by rival governments, one in the east and the other in the west, and the result is neglect of infrastructure in many areas.

Kim Jong Un and Putin meet for hours

ABC News reported that North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin met for about five hours today in Russia’s Far East.

Kim said he supports Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and all of Putin’s decisions.

AP News said North Korea may have tens of millions of aging artillery shells and rockets based on Soviet designs that could be given to Russia for its war in Ukraine.

In return, North Korea may get food and advanced missile technology from Russia.

American caver rescued in Türkiye

American caver Mark Dickey, who was trapped thousands of feet underground in a cave in Türkiye after he experienced a serious health issue, was rescued on Tuesday.

Dickey is an experienced caver but was incapacitated by internal bleeding. The bleeding was so serious that he had to undergo a blood transfusion in the cave.

There was an international team who worked on a plan to retrieve him and they were successful when Dickey emerged from the cave while strapped to a stretcher. He looked like he was in good spirits, smiling and waving.

Dickey said it felt amazing to be above ground and thanked rescue teams and the Turkish government for saving his life.
