NBC’s “Making It” competition features deaf woman

There is a reality competition TV show on NBC called “Making It” that started their third season on June 24th and Kara Walker, who was born without an eardrum in one ear and wears a hearing aid with the other ear, is one of the contestants.

Kara is from Santa Maria, California. In one of the episodes, Kara explains that she has the Goldenhar syndrome but did not allow that to stop her from doing what she wants to do. She is competing for the title of a Master Maker and hopes to win $100,000. The TV show “Making It” features people with different crafting skills. The hosts are Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman, who are both known for their roles with the TV show “Parks and Recreation.”

The Daily Moth interviewed Kara through a VRS interpreter as Kara does not sign, but speaks for herself. We asked a few questions about her experience being part of this competition. On the show, she is able to communicate by speaking and if there is something that she does not understand, she will raise her hand and people will repeat for her. However, she did explain that she had a melt down on the first day of arrival because of communication barriers with masks and face shields. Kara explained that after the producers learned about the situation, they spoke louder and repeated information for her which Kara said it worked better for her.

Kara explained to us that she did apply for season 2 and did not make it and applied again for season 3 and got in. She said that it is an exciting season. We asked her if there were any comments she had for us. She answered that no matter what we are born with, it should not stop us from achieving our dreams.

Kara is trying to start her own home décor line for Halloween stuff. She has an Instagram account that you can check out if you want to see more of her artwork. We included a link in this transcript. You can watch “Making It” on Thursdays at 8pm ET. From our understanding, the finale will be on August 12th. We wish Kara the best of luck!
