Homeless man rescues 6-year-old deaf girl

I read a couple of news reports that said a homeless man in Houston rescued a 6-year-old deaf girl named Serenity who was wandering near a busy highway.

The girl’s mother, Mercedes Polk, said she went to the Lantrip Elementary School last week to pick up her daughter but she was not there. She said school staff thought the girl was at the playground or in the bathroom, but she was nowhere to be found.

The mother then got a phone call from police, who said Serenity was found near an entrance to a freeway. Police said a homeless man saw the girl walking alone wearing a t-shirt with “Lantrip Elementary School” written on it and called the school. A school worker went to get her, but she wouldn’t get in a car, so the school contacted the police, who then informed the mother about her whereabouts. The mother said when she went to get her daughter, she was very emotional and shaking. The mother said she is very thankful to the homeless man because he saved her life.

The mother said her daughter was mistakenly placed in the school’s group of students who walk home after school. Serenity tried to walk home by herself and became lost. School officials told police that a sub teacher made the mistake of putting Serenity in the wrong group.

The school district and the Texas Child Protective Services are investigating the incident.
