Deaf news briefs: Queer Eye and Bachelor

We have two quick Deaf news briefs related to entertainment.

The “Queer Eye” reality TV show season 8 on Netflix will release on January 24th and will feature a Deaf person named Denton Mallas and the Louisiana School for the Deaf football team. Denton is the dean of students and athletic director for LSD. Apparently, Denton’s good friends, Dr. Natalie Delgado, who is the executive director for LSD and her fiancée Marissa Ramos, nominated Denton for the show. We will show a short clip from Denton’s Instagram page:

We reached out to Denton for a comment, and this is what he said.

“I’m feeling nervous, yet at the same time, I’m excited to have an opportunity to show our deaf school and what it looks like for deaf schools in general.

I’m honestly surprised and didn’t expect it when they contacted me. At that time, I didn’t feel like a “hero” because I’m a regular person who simply do with passion for small deaf schools like LSD.”

Also, here’s a quick fact, in the past, Karamo, one of the stars of the “Queer Eye” has been praised by the Deaf community for his pledge with adding subtitles/captions for videos and for learning some basic sign language. If you have a Netflix account, you can watch season 8 and catch Denton there.

The second news brief is that there will be another contestant who has a hearing loss on “The Bachelor” TV show season 28 in the hope of winning the bachelor Joey Graziadei’s love.

Daisy Kent (25) from San Diego, California is one of the 32 women on the show.

Based on several articles, it seems that Daisy prefers to identify herself as someone with a hearing loss. She lost her hearing when she was 15 years old then at the age of 17 she was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, but at the age of 21, doctors told her that she also had Lyme’s disease which they think was the biggest cause of her hearing loss.

She got a cochlear implant and started to document her hearing loss journey on TikTok. It seems that she will be one of the key figures of the show. If you are interested in watching, “The Bachelor” will air starting on Monday, January 22 at 8pm EST on ABC channel.
