She was a deaf female astronomer. Annie developed the Harvard Classification Scheme which classifies stars based on their temperatures.

Annie was born hearing, but when she was around 30 years old, she got the scarlet fever that caused her to be profoundly deaf. She mainly relied on lip-reading.

Annie loved to study the stars. She got a Master’s Degree in astronomy. She worked at the Harvard Observatory at Harvard University.

Annie got many honors and awards for her work such as being the first woman to get an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Oxford and was the first woman of many more!

Harvard finally recognized Annie and her work three years before she passed away because they were resistant due to Annie being a woman and deaf. Harvard finally awarded her three years before Annie died in 1941. Today, there is an asteroid and a crater on the moon named after her.
