Here are Tuesday, October 27 top news briefs.

Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed by the Senate Monday night in a 52-48 vote. She took a constitutional oath outside of the White House with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas with President Trump and Barrett's husband looking on.

Barrett had another swearing in ceremony at the Supreme Court today with Chief Justice John Roberts to make her appointment as the 9th justice official. It is a lifetime term. The Supreme Court now has a 6-3 conservative majority.

Democratic leaders criticized the appointment because the process was rushed from the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg to a swearing-in a week before the election.

In Philadelphia on Monday night, two police officers shot and killed a Black man who was holding a knife on a street. His name was Walter Wallace, Jr.

There is a video of the shooting that was posted on Twitter by Ben Crump, who represents George Floyd's family. He is a well-known civil rights lawyer. Crump said the officers shot over 10 times and made no attempts at de-escalating the situation.

The shooting sparked protests on Monday night with over 300 people marching. Philadelphia police said 30 officers were injured with rocks, bricks, and projectiles thrown at them and that a 56-year-old female officer was hit by a truck and had a broken leg. Over 30 people were arrested.

There is an investigation in the shooting. There continues to be protests on Tuesday night.

There may be another hurricane headed towards Louisiana. Tropical Storm Zeta is churning in the Gulf of Mexico and it is expected to turn into a “fast-moving hurricane” that will have storm impacts starting midday Wednesday in southeastern Louisiana. This would be the third hurricane in two months to hit the state.

A federal judge blocked the Department of Justice's attempt to act as President Donald Trump’s defense attorney in a defamation lawsuit from E. Jean Carroll, who accused Trump of raping her in the 1990’s. Last summer, Trump said Carroll was lying and said he never met her. Carroll sued Trump in New York state court for defamation. Last month the DOJ moved to represent Trump because they viewed Trump’s comments as being within his role as a federal official as a president, which would make him immune from a defamation lawsuit according to current laws. But U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan has now blocked the DOJ from doing this, allowing the lawsuit to proceed. We’ll see what happens.

That is all the top news briefs for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
