Wednesday, July 28 top stories

It is Wednesday, July 28. Here are today’s top stories.

Pfizer said new data shows that a third dose of its Covid-19 vaccine can strongly boost protection against the Delta variant. Pfizer said studies show that those ages 18 to 55 who receive a third dose have more than five-fold of antibody levels. For those ages 65 to 85, the antibody levels are 11-fold after receiving a third dose. CNN said the data hasn’t been peer-reviewed or published. Pfizer plans to ask the FDA to authorize a booster dose.

Pfizer said it sold $7.8 billion in Covid-19 shots in the second quarter of this year and is predicting that it will make over $33 billion this year from the vaccine.

A top official at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston said that about 10 percent of children who show up and test positive for Covid-19 do require hospitalization and that about one-third of those may require critical care with some requiring ventilator support. The official recommended that children under 12, who are not eligible for vaccines, wear masks in schools and practice social distancing and sanitizing and safe behaviors.

Former President Donald Trump issued a statement yesterday criticizing the CDC’s new guidance that vaccinated Americans should wear masks indoors again in areas with high Covid-19 transmission.

Trump said, “We won’t go back. We won’t mask our children… Don’t surrender to COVID. Don’t go back! Why do Democrats distrust the science? Don’t let this happen to our children or our Country.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced today that she is requiring all House members and aides to wear masks at all times in the hall of the House. Lawmakers are allowed to take their masks off when speaking. She directed the sergeant-at-arms to enforce this.

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said the mask guidances from the CDC was not based on science but came from liberal government officials who want to continue to live in a pandemic state.

Pelosi, when getting into her SUV, called McCarthy a “moron.”

News reports said President Joe Biden will formally announce on Thursday that all civilian federal employees must receive Covid-19 vaccines or they will be required to undergo regular testing and restrictions on travel.

Biden told a reporter yesterday that if you’re not vaccinated, then you’re not smart.

Simone Biles had withdrawn from the individual all-around gymnastics competition at the 2020 Olympics so she can focus on her mental health. USA Gymnastics said in a statement that Biles will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week’s individual event finals. Biles is the defending champion and was expected to win another gold medal in the all-around.

Her withdrawal has stirred an outpouring of support but also a torrent of criticism. Supporters say Biles is courageous to stand up for her own mental health. Biles’ situation has sparked a conversation on how mental health is just as important as physical health for athletes.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
