It is Tuesday, November 1. Here are today’s top stories.

Suspect charged in Delphi murders

Police in Delphi, Indiana announced on Monday that they arrested a 50-year-old local man named Richard Allen and charged him with murdering two teenage girls in 2017 at a wooded area with a hiking trail and an old railroad bridge.

The girls’ names were Abby Williams (13) and Libby German (14).

They disappeared on February 13, 2017, after posting a picture of Abby walking on the old railroad bridge. Their bodies were found the next day about half a mile away from the bridge. One of the girls’ phones had a video of a suspicious male walking across the old railroad bridge. The man was heard saying, “Guys… down the hill.”

It is the first time that police named a suspect in all this time and it is believed that Allen is the “bridge guy.” Allen lived five minutes from the railroad bridge and is married. He worked at a CVS store as a licensed pharmacy tech.

In a chilling account, Libby’s aunt said she recalls that when she went to that particular CVS to print pictures of Libby from her phone to use for her funeral, Allen was the CVS employee who assisted her and that Allen looked at her in the eye to tell her that there would be no charge for the pictures. Delphi locals told news reporters that they are shocked that Allen is the suspected killer.

Allen pleaded not guilty. There will be a trial in March 2023. Police said the case is still open and that they are still accepting tips for more information.

Justice Roberts temporarily blocks Trump taxes from Congress

The Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts approved an emergency request from former president Donald Trump to put a temporary block — a stay — on the release of Trump’s tax returns to a House committee.

Democrats currently control the House and all its committees. A committee said they needed six years’ worth of returns to check how the IRS conducts its audits of presidents and vice presidents.

Trump’s side said it’s just a plot to get his taxes released to the public and that it is unprecedented and inappropriate for Congress to use its powers in this way.

The Supreme Court issued the stay and is asking the House committee to issue a formal response to Trump’s appeal by November 10.

Rapper Takeoff killed in Houston

Takeoff, a 28-year-old musician who was a part of a rap group called Migos, was shot and killed this early morning in Houston at a bowling and pool hall.

News reports said Takeoff attended a private party and played dice. It is not clear what happened prior to the shooting. Police said security guards heard the shooting but did not see the shooter and when they arrived at the scene, they found a victim with a gunshot wound to the head or neck.

Takeoff’s real name is Kirshnik Khari Ball. Many people on social media mourned the death and called for a stop to gun violence.

Delta pilots may strike over contract dispute

Reuters reported that pilots at Delta Air Lines have voted to authorize a strike if negotiators cannot reach an agreement on a new employment contract. There are almost 15,000 pilots with Delta and they are a part of the Air Line Pilots Association union.

Reuters explained that a strike won’t happen immediately because, under U.S. law, Delta pilots must go through a process with the National Mediation Board and then go through a 30-day cooling-off period before they can walk off their jobs. So we’ll certainly know if it comes to that point.

Delta said its pilots are not on strike and that there is progress being made on contract negotiations.

MLK Jr. covered hospital bill for birth of actress Julia Roberts

An interesting fact about Martin Luther King Jr. surfaced on social media this week — that 55 years ago, he and his wife Coretta Scott King paid for the hospital bill for the birth of actress Julia Roberts.

The Washington Post confirmed that it is true. Roberts explained in a recent interview that before she was born, her parents owned and operated a theater school in Atlanta. The Kings’ children attended the theater school and the families developed a friendship. Roberts said the Kings helped her parents “out of a jam.”

Bernice King, the youngest child of the Kings, said she knew the story well and is grateful that it’s getting attention. Bernice said it is moving to be reminded of her “parents’ generosity and influence.”

Updates on South Korea tragedy

Here are some updates on the Halloween crowd crush disaster in South Korea that killed at least 156 people.

A top police official said an internal investigation found that there were many urgent calls from concerned people who thought the amount of people gathering was dangerous. The official said police officers who received the calls did not handle them effectively.

AP News explained that most of the deaths occurred in a narrow downhill alley in a popular nightlife district in Seoul called Itaewon. Many victims fell on top of one another. First responders had a hard time arriving because the entire area was packed with revelers and slow-moving vehicles.

U.S. Congressman Brad Wenstrup of Ohio said her niece, Anne Marie Gieske, was one of the victims. She was a nursing student at the University of Kentucky and was studying abroad in Seoul.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
