Troy Kotsur honored in Mesa, but Jeep with Oscar in it stolen

Deaf actor Troy Kotsur was in his hometown of Mesa, Arizona on Thursday to be honored by city officials for winning his Oscar award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “CODA,” but there was drama because his Jeep was stolen with his golden statue inside of it a few days later on Saturday, according to a report from “Today.”

Kotsur brought the Oscar with him to the special ceremony in Mesa.

The Mesa Police Department told “Today” that “Mr. Kotsur’s vehicle was stolen and recovered… Once Mr. Kotsur notified the department of the theft, officers began their investigation and through investigative techniques, they located the vehicle with two juvenile male suspects inside.” The suspects' names weren’t released because they are underage. They were charged in juvenile court of “theft of means of transportation.” Police said, “Mr. Kotsur had his vehicle returned to him to include all the property that was inside.”

“Deadline” said Kotsur tweeted but then deleted an image of Mesa officers with a statement that said a little kid stole his Jeep while the Oscar was in it but that the city of Mesa found the Jeep and the Oscar. Deadline showed a screenshot of the tweet, which had Kotsur posing in a group picture with four police officers, of whom one of them held the Oscar.

AP News said on Thursday, Mesa Mayor John Giles awarded Kotsur with a key to the city and said Kotsur is a “remarkable example of dedication and commitment.”

Kotsur was born and raised in Mesa and his father was Mesa’s police chief. Kotsur honored his father during his Oscars acceptance speech.

It’s a relief that Kotsur is okay and that he got his Jeep and Oscar back.
