Elon Musk seems ready to take over Twitter

Elon Musk visited the headquarters of Twitter on Wednesday and brought a real-life sink with him as a play on the phrase, “let that sink in.” Musk has a deadline on Friday to close his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, so his visit to the headquarters is a strong sign that the deal will proceed. He also changed his Twitter profile to “Chief Twit.”

Musk said today that he wants to buy Twitter so the “future of civilization” can have a “common digital town square. He said he is worried that in the future, social media will “splinter into far right-wing and far left-wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society.”

Musk has said in the past that he intends to bring back Donald Trump’s account, which was permanently suspended after the Jan 6. attack on the Capitol. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

Same-sex marriage now legal across Mexico

AP News reported that same-sex marriage is now legal in all of Mexico’s 32 states. The last state to legalize it is Tamaulipas, which borders Texas’ southern tip.

AP News said while legislators were voting on the measure, there were chants and shouting from groups both for and against same-sex marriage. Legislators moved to another room to finish their debate and vote.

Three men from Florida were arrested and accused of stealing $9 million worth of frozen meat from beef and pork packaging plants in the Midwest.

Authorities said in June, several semi-trailers and loads of frozen beef were stolen in Nebraska. Investigators were able to connect that theft with about 45 other thefts that dated back to June 2021 for a total of $9 million in losses.

The three men are all from the Miami area. Investigators are not sure where the stolen beef went.

Powerball jackpot now at $800M

The Powerball jackpot is now at $800 million for the next drawing, scheduled for Saturday after no ticket matched all six numbers in Wednesday’s drawing. It is the second-largest jackpot in Powerball’s history. The cash value of that jackpot is $383.7 million — after taxes are taken out.

The biggest jackpot in history was in 2016 with a $1.5B Powerball prize. ABC 7 News said the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot is 1 in 292 million. So someone has to be really, really, really lucky.

Jan. 6 rioter sentenced to 7.5 years in prison

A Jan. 6 rioter, named Albuquerque Head, who is from Tennessee, was sentenced to 7.5 years in federal prison for his role in the attack on the Capitol and specifically for dragging former D.C. police officer Michael Fanone into the crowd. It is one of the longest sentences so far in the Jan 6. cases.

Fanone sustained a heart attack on that day and has since resigned from the D.C. police department.

Motorcyclist engulfed in flames after being tased

About two weeks ago, police in Arkansas was chasing a motorcyclist that had no visible license plate at speeds nearing 100 mph. The motorcyclist eventually stopped in a residential area and as he tried to run away, an officer caught up to him and shot a taser at him and was shocked to see his body burst into flames. Officers were able to douse the flames using fire extinguishers. An investigation found that the motorcyclist, 38-year-old Christopher Gaylor, was carrying a backpack with about 1 gallon of gasoline in it. Officers said they didn’t realize he had gasoline in his backpack.

Gaylor was hospitalized and police said he is in good condition and is expected to recover. He faces a felony fleeing charge and several other related charges. CNN said they tried reaching out to Gaylor but couldn’t and they do not know if he has retained an attorney.
