Parkland school shooter sentenced to life in prison

On Wednesday, Judge Elizabeth Scherer sentenced Nikolas Cruz to life in prison for murdering 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida in 2018.

Last month a jury decided against prosecutors’ recommendation that he get the death penalty. The jury instead recommended a life sentence. Florida law requires the judge to follow the jury’s recommendation, so the judge’s sentence made it official.

Prior to the sentencing, the families of the victims were allowed to come forward and confront Cruz while making their victim impact statements. Many family members took turns making statements over the past two days. Some of the remarks included that Cruz was “pure evil,” “a domestic terrorist,” and he should “burn in hell.”

Cruz is 24 years old. His life sentence has no possibility of parole.

Razor blades found in Halloween candy

Police in Eugene, Oregon said they received at least four reports from parents that they found small razor blades embedded in their children’s Halloween candy. The razors are about the size of a pencil sharpener blade. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

Police said they are searching for a suspect in a specific neighborhood called Friendly and are asking for tips for any further information.

Local authorities have advised parents to check their children’s candies before they consume them. It’s not clear what kind of candy the blades were found in. There is a lot of concern.

UN: Global warming to melt major glaciers by 2050

A UN report warned that because of the effects of climate change, many glaciers at well-known places such as the Yosemite National Park or Mount Kilimanjaro may vanish by 2050.

The UN study analyzed 18,600 glaciers at 50 UNESCO World Heritage sites and found that they have “been retreating at an accelerated rate since 2000 due to CO2 emissions, which are warming temperatures.”
