November 15 top stories

It is November 15. Here are today’s top stories.

Israeli military raids Gaza hospital

The Israeli military raided the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza last night. Soldiers conducted searches and interrogations and now control the building.

The Israel military has long said that Hamas is using the hospital and underground facilities as a command center, which Hamas has denied. The U.S. government said yesterday that it has information that Hamas does use hospitals for military operations.

There were about 700 patients in the hospital during the raid in addition to about 400 workers and 3,000 people who were taking refuge amid Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. A hospital official told Al Jazeera news that Israeli forces detained people, handcuffed and blindfolded them and took them to unknown destinations.

If the Israeli military finds evidence of a Hamas command center in the hospital, it could have a significant impact on the war and international opinion. News reports said there is little information right now, but we should know more later tonight and tomorrow.

8 high school students charged with murdering classmate

Law enforcement in Las Vegas announced that eight high school students between the ages of 13 and 17 have been arrested on suspicion of murder in the fatal beating of a 17-year-old classmate, Jonathan Lewis Jr.

The fight happened on November 1. Police said the brawl was over a pair of wireless headphones and a vape pen that was stolen from the victim’s friend.

Police said the fight was prearranged to take place after classes ended on that day and that 10 students kicked, punched and stomped on Lewis Jr. He was hospitalized and passed away of his injuries after a week.

There is a video on social media that shows the brawl, which took place outside at an alley near the school.

Lewis Jr.’s father said his son was standing up for one of his smaller friends. The father said the whole family is in shock.

Police are working to identify the two additional students for possible charges.

Updates on Pelosi hammer attack trial

Here are two updates on the trial of David DePape, who is accused of using a hammer to attack Paul Pelosi, the husband of the former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, at their home last year.

Paul testified in court. He said he woke up to see DePape standing in the doorway with a hammer and ties. He said he knew he was in serious danger and tried to stay as calm as possible.

According to a previous report from Politico, Paul said he had to use the restroom and then got his phone, which was charging there, to call 911. When officers arrived, DePape is seen on a video swinging a hammer at Paul’s head. Paul was hospitalized for six days with a fractured skull and other injuries.

DePape also testified. He said that he went to the Pelosi home with the intention to ask Nancy about her theories of Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election. He said he wanted to wear an inflatable unicorn costume and film himself asking Nancy these questions and post it online. DePape said he wanted to lure more targets and he hit Paul because his “plan” was ruined (when the officers arrived).

DePape faces life in prison if he is convicted of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assaulting a federal official’s family member.

Senator almost starts fight

On Tuesday during a hearing in the Capitol, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) stopped a fellow senator from starting a fight with the president of the Teamsters union, who was seated at the testimony table.

What happened? Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Ohio) brought up old social media posts made by O’Brien in which he called the senator a clown and fraud and that he could find him anyplace, anytime.

Sen. Mullin challenged O’Brien if they wanted to do it now — to fight now. O’Brien said fine. The senator got up but Bernie shouted for Mullin to stop and sit down.

NBC News said the rest of the hearing had Mullin and O’Brien exchanging insults, but they concluded by agreeing to have coffee together.

Plane forced to return after horse onboard gets loose

A 747 cargo plane that departed New York to go to Belgium was forced to return after a horse escaped from its stall. The plane had just taken off and was 30 minutes into its flight when the pilot told air traffic control that they had to return because a horse escaped and they couldn’t “resecure the horse.”

The plane made a U-turn and dumped about 20 tons of fuel into the Atlantic Ocean due to the flight’s weight before landing. The pilot requested a veterinarian to be at the JFK Airport to help with the situation. The plane was eventually able to take off and arrived in Belgium.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
