It is November 10. Here are today’s top stories.

Former military police member arrested over Jan 6. riot

The FBI said they have arrested Gregory Yetman, a former military police member in the New Jersey Army National Guard, over his alleged role in the Jan 6. Capitol attack.

The FBI issued a federal arrest warrant for Yetman and when law enforcement attempted to arrest him, he fled on foot into the woods. There was a manhunt in New Jersey with a $10,000 reward offered for his capture. He turned himself into police on Friday morning.

Yetman will face several felony charges such as assaulting officers and obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder.

The Department of Justice said more than 1,202 people have been charged in connection with the Jan. 6 riot.

Undersea volcano eruption creates new island

An undersea volcano near Japan erupted three weeks ago and created a new island.

The volcano started erupting on October 21. After 10 days, the growing pile of volcanic ash and rocks on the seabed was enough to rise above the sea surface.

Now it is a new island that is just over 300 feet in diameter and 66 feet above the sea.

It is about half a mile away from the island of Iwo Jima or Ioto, which is well-known for being a World War II battle site between the U.S. and Japan.

The new island may not last for a long time because volcanic activity has stalled and the new land is being slowly washed away by waves.

Updates on Israel-Hamas war

The Islamic Jihad group in Gaza released a video showing two Israeli hostages. One is a woman in her 70s who was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7. The second is a 13-year-old teenager. Both appear to be physically okay and ask the Israeli government to make deals so they can return home. The Israeli military said the videos are a form of psychological warfare and vowed to do all they can to bring back hostages.

President Biden said he supports Israel’s daily four-hour breaks in fighting for humanitarian reasons. There are thousands of Gazans walking on a road to evacuate northern Gaza.

Two women in Tel Aviv were injured by shrapnel from rockets launched by Hamas. One woman got hit in her leg while she was in a car.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the country is not seeking to conquer, occupy or govern Gaza after its war with Hamas ends, but that he needs to take measures to make sure that the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that killed 1,400 people in south Israel doesn’t happen again. He said there needs to be a “credible force” that, if necessary, will enter Gaza and kill the killers.”

At least three hospitals in Gaza said they are seeing explosions inside or near their buildings as Israeli forces push into Gaza City. The Israeli military said it is targeting Hamas’ tunnels and that some tunnels sit beneath hospitals.

Government officials in Gaza, which are controlled by Hamas, said over 11,000 people have been killed there since the start of the war.

The head of the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees warned that the fighting in Gaza could lead to a new generation of violence.

Biden to meet Chinese President Xi

President Biden plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in California on Wednesday. Both will be attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco.

Both countries do not have a good diplomatic relationship with each other, but they benefit from their economic relationship.

The White House said on the agenda are concerns with China interfering with Taiwanese independence, the war in Ukraine, and the war between Israel and Hamas. Biden also plans to warn Xi against interfering in the U.S. elections.

China said it wants to make sure that the U.S. does not seek to change China’s system, does not seek a new Cold War, and does not support Taiwan's independence.

Sen. Manchin won’t seek re-election

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va) announced yesterday that he will not run for re-election next year.

Axios said “the retirement of the Senate’s most conservative Democrat is a major blow to his party as they face a tough 2024 map.”

Axios said there is a possibility that Manchin will try to run for the presidency as a third-party candidate.
