Bridge in Crimea blown up; Putin retaliates with strikes

On Saturday, an explosion caused severe damage to the Russian-built and owned Kerch bridge that connects Crimea to mainland Russia. Russian officials said the blast was caused by a truck bomb and that three people were killed.

The Ukrainian government did not claim responsibility for the blast but celebrated the blast on social media. Several top Ukrainian officials made mocking posts.

“The Guardian” explained that the bridge opened in 2018 and was a key transport link for carrying military equipment to Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine.

Russian President Putin accused Ukraine of committing terrorism. The Russian military launched a barrage of missile strikes against Ukrainian cities on Sunday and Monday, killing at least 25 people and injuring many more. Several missiles struck Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.

Deadly protests in Iran continue for 4th week

Axios reported that protests in Iran over the death of Mahsa Amini, who died while in police custody. Protesters said she was beaten for not wearing her hijab the correct way. The protests have continued into their fourth week.

A nonprofit organization said at least 185 people, including at least 19 children, have been killed in the nationwide protests.

Iranian authorities have restricted internet access in an attempt to suppress the protests. But videos on social media show that there are still protests taking place across Iran.

Several female political figures and celebrities have cut their hair to show solidarity for the Iranian protesters.

“Texas Pete” hot sauce makers sued

A California man has filed a class action lawsuit against the makers of “Texas Pete” hot sauce because the hot sauce is not made in Texas but in North Carolina. The plaintiff said it is false advertising and that he wouldn’t have bought the hot sauce if he knew it was made in North Carolina.

The Texas Pete hot sauce factory is in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The company said on its website that it chose to brand itself with “Texas” because of the state’s reputation for spicy cuisine.

The lawsuit said Texas Pete is cheating customers who incorrectly believe that they are buying authentic Texas hot sauce.

USA Today said they reached out to Texas Pete for comment but did not get a response.

Family dogs kill baby and toddler

In tragic news from Tennessee, a 5-month-old baby boy and her 2-year-old sister were killed by an attack from the family’s two dogs. This happened on Thursday. The mother tried to intervene but couldn’t stop the attack and was seriously injured and hospitalized with bite marks all over her body.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet that “…the mother has been upgraded to stable condition… The two pit bulls responsible for the attack were euthanized this afternoon by Memphis Animal Services. This is still an active, ongoing investigation.”

Police said they don’t know what caused the dogs to attack. A friend of the mother said the family owned the two pet dogs for over eight years without any violent incidents.

Michael Fox and Christopher Lloyd reunite

Actors Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, famous for their roles in the “Back to the Future” trilogy, went viral on social media in a video that shows them hugging each other onstage at the New York Comic Con.

Fox said he had great chemistry with Lloyd and that all he had to do while shooting the film was “react” to Lloyd’s portrayal of Dr. Emmett Brown.

Fox retired from acting in 2020 because of health issues with Parkinson’s disease. He established a foundation to research Parkinson’s disease in 2000 and has raised over $1 billion for the effort.
