Monday, January 24 top stories

Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth. It is Monday, January 24. Hope your weekend was good. Here are today’s top stories.

Exciting NFL playoffs
On Saturday and Sunday, there were four thrilling NFL playoff games. Three of the games were decided in the final few seconds by a field goal, and one went to overtime.

Star quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady both lost, defeated by the San Francisco 49ers and the L.A. Rams, who will move on to the NFC Championship match on Sunday. The winner of that game will go to the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills in overtime after seven lead changes on Sunday night. Kansas City will now play against the Cincinnati Bengals, who beat the Titans with a field goal as time expired. Kansas City is hoping for a third straight Super Bowl appearance.

Eastern Europe conflict heats up
On Sunday, the Biden administration ordered all family members of staff who work in the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine to leave the country out of concerns that Russia could invade at any time.

Russia currently has about 100,000 troops near Ukraine’s border but said they do not plan to invade.

We know that in 2014, Russia annexed an important region in Ukraine, the Crimea.

Member countries of the NATO have outlined potential troop and ship deployments and sent fighter jets and a frigate to NATO countries in Eastern Europe.

Ukraine is an important country for both Russia and the rest of Europe because of its role with carrying natural gas pipelines from Russia to Europe that provides 40% of Europe’s natural gas supply.

Six bodies found in Milwaukee home
On Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee, police officers who did a welfare check on a home found four men and one woman dead. A sixth body was found early this morning. It is not yet known their identities. A police spokesperson said there were “murders” but that they don’t believe there is a threat to the community, such as a suspect on the loose. This could mean this is a murder-suicide type of situation, but we don’t know that. The autopsies will take place today. I’ll provide an update tomorrow.

Trial for three cops in murder of George Floyd

Today a federal trial started for three former Minneapolis police officers involved in the murder of George Floyd. They are the “other three” officers, not Derek Chauvin, who has been convicted of murder in state court and is in prison.

The three officers’ names are Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Kueng.

Federal prosecutors have accused the three of depriving Floyd of his civil rights while acting under “the color of law.” The three are charged with failing to provide Floyd with medical care. Two of the officers, Thao and Kueng, have an additional charge of failing to stop Chauvin from continuing to kneel on Floyd’s neck.

The three officers have pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. The trial could last four weeks.

In a separate but related case, the three officers face Minnesota state charges of aiding and abetting manslaughter. That state trial will begin in June.

Blind man who rescued 5 after OKC bombing dies
A blind man named Raymond Washburn, who rescued five people from the destruction inflicted by the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, passed away at 75 years of age last week. In 1995, Washburn owned and operated a snack bar on the fourth floor of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building when it was bombed. He led four customers and an employee out to safety. Washburn said in an interview that “I had the advantage over them because not being able to see. I felt like that… this is one time that you know you want to try to help somebody as much as you can. I knew how to get out…” Washburn was a member of the Yuchi Tribe in Oklahoma.
