It is Monday, December 5. Here are today’s top stories.

Paul Pelosi appears in public

Paul Pelosi made his first public appearance since being attacked in a home invasion in October on Sunday night at the Kennedy Center Honors. Paul was with his wife, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and wore a black hat and a black glove.

Paul was injured in his head and arm when he was attacked by a man with a hammer who was looking for Nancy. The suspect, David DePape, has been charged with attempted murder. DePape will have a preliminary hearing on December 14.

North Carolina electricity grid attack

On Saturday night in North Carolina’s Moore County, two power substations were hit by gunfire from an unknown person. Authorities said the damage caused tens of thousands of people to be without electricity and that it could take several days to repair.

Local law enforcement and the FBI said it was a “targeted” attack and they are investigating. A possible motive for the shooting is to thwart a drag show that was going on. There were protesters and police at the drag show prior to the shooting and the show had to end early because of the power outages. Police said they are looking into a possible connection but haven’t found anything so far.

FedEx Driver charged with kidnapping and murdering girl

On Wednesday, a 7-year-old girl named Athena Strand went missing after she disappeared near her home in Paradise, Texas. On Friday, searchers found her body.

Police arrested a 31-year-old FedEx contract driver, Tanner Lee Horner, and charged him with aggravated kidnapping and capital murder of a person under 10 years old.

Police said the driver confessed to killing the girl. The girl likely died within an hour after she was kidnapped. The driver delivered a package to the girl’s home shortly before she was kidnapped.

FedEx said their thoughts are with the family of Athena Strand during this most difficult time and that words cannot describe their shock and sorrow.

News reports said Horner used to be an Uber driver but was banned, but it is not clear why.

Tampa police chief resigns after controversy

Tampa Police Chief Mary O’Connor resigned today after a police body camera video revealed that she used her badge and authority to get out of a traffic violation in November. O’Connor was riding with her husband on a golf cart on a street and was pulled over for not having a tag on it. O’Connor told the officer that she was Tampa’s chief and showed her badge before asking him to “just let us go.” The couple was let go without a citation. Tampa’s mayor asked for O’Connor’s resignation after an internal review found that she abused her position.

“Twitter Files” on Hunter Biden story ban

Elon Musk provided a journalist with access to internal documents of how Twitter officials handled the Hunter Biden laptop story when it broke just prior to the 2020 presidential election.

Twitter officials at the time blocked the story, which was published by the NY Post, saying they did so because the story came from stolen and hacked materials. Twitter’s then-CEO Jack Dorsey reversed the decision two days later and apologized. The story was allowed to spread on Twitter.

Axios explained that the “Twitter Files” showed that there were debates on whether the decision to block the story was the right call, but that there was no “smoking-gun evidence of a partisan conspiracy to censor.”

Dad rescues 2-year-old daughter from coyote

On Friday afternoon in Los Angeles, a coyote attacked a 2-year-old girl in front of her home. The attack was captured on a Ring security camera.

The girl’s father had just arrived home from picking up his children from daycare. The video shows that the girl was walking on the driveway on one side of the family SUV as the father was on the other side. The coyote slowly walked across the street and bit on the girl’s leg and started to drag her. The father walked around the car and once he saw the animal, he picked up the girl and threw a water bottle at the coyote, sending it running off.

The father said they rushed the girl to a hospital, where she got several rabies shots.

Wildlife officials are trying to catch the coyote.
