Trump departs Florida ahead of NYC indictment

Former President Donald Trump flew from his Mar-a-Lago home in South Florida on his personal jet this afternoon to head to New York City for his appearance in a Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday to face his indictment on 30 counts of business fraud. News channels filmed Trump’s motorcade and departure. There were several groups of Trump supporters that lined up on sidewalks on roads leading to the airport.

The case has to do with Trump’s role in the hush money payment to Stormy Daniels in 2016, which may have violated several laws because the payments weren’t reported and may have been covered up.

Trump’s attorneys said they would challenge the charges and seek to dismiss them.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the NYPD and city officials are prepared for tomorrow. Adams said they have not received any credible threats so everyone in the city should go on with their lives as normal.

The NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said there will be an increased police presence in the next two days. NYPD officers have blocked roads around Trump Tower and the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse.

There will be a lot more news on this case tomorrow and the rest of the week.

Teacher who was shot by 6-year-old files $40M lawsuit

The elementary school teacher who was shot by a 6-year-old student in Virginia on January 6 has filed a lawsuit against school officials in Newport News seeking $40 million in damages.

The teacher’s name is Abby Zwerner and she is 25 years old. She was shot in the hand and chest and was in the hospital for about two weeks and underwent four surgeries.

Nobody has faced criminal charges in the shooting so far. The gun came from the boy’s mother, but she has not been charged as well.

The lawsuit accuses school officials of failing to respond to the teacher’s concerns that the boy was in a “violent mood” and failing to act on several reports from students that the boy had a gun.

[Advertisement from Deaf Law Center]:

Announcing the New York Adult Survivors Act: Many survivors of sexual assault need time to process the hurt they’ve experienced; it might take years or even decades for a survivor to tell someone what happened to them. For years, our laws were out of step with that reality. Because of that, many survivors lost the opportunity to hold the person who hurt them accountable in court. Now, those survivors are getting a fighting chance. The Adult Survivors Act is a New York State law that creates a one-time, one-year look back window for adult sexual assault survivors who are outside the statute of limitations. That means that any adult survivor – no matter when they were assaulted and even if they are outside the statute of limitations – can file a civil case against their abuser or the institution that protected them, through November 24, 2023.

Last Wednesday in San Antonio, a man found out that someone stole his truck from his home. The man knew where the truck was because it had an Apple AirTag in it.

The man called the police and then went with someone else to go and confront the suspected thief, who was at a shopping center about 20 miles away. The owner shot and killed the suspect. Police said the suspected thief may have pulled out a firearm before the owners shot and killed him.

Police said they are investigating the incident and are unsure if the owner of the truck will face criminal charges. Police advised the public to not do something like this but to let them handle the situation.
