Philadelphia I-95 overpass collapses

On Sunday morning in Philadelphia, a tanker truck carrying over 8,000 gallons of gasoline caught fire underneath an I-95 overpass, causing it to collapse. Nobody was injured.

Pennsylvania Gov. Shapiro said it may take several months to rebuild the I-95 roadway, which is a critical roadway that saw about 160,000 vehicles pass it daily. Officials are now working to provide alternative routes.

4 children found alive in Amazon jungle

Four siblings in Colombia were found alive on Friday after enduring 40 days in the Amazon jungle after their small plane crashed. The siblings are aged 13, 9, 4, and 1. They are now in a hospital but are expected to be okay.

The children’s mother was with them on the plane and is said to initially survive the crash but died after four days.

The oldest child said the mother told the children to “go away” from the plane, meaning the mother may have been seriously injured and told the children to find a way out of the jungle. The pilot and another adult died in the plane crash.

The children used a soda bottle to collect water in the jungle and hid in tree trunks to protect themselves. They ate cassava flour, seeds, and fruits. The four children were members of the Huitoto Indigenous group and had familiarity with the environment and were able to survive.

JPMorgan settles with Epstein’s victims

JP Morgan Chase reached a settlement with sexual abuse victims of Jeffrey Epstein after they filed a lawsuit alleging that the bank ignored repeated warnings that Epstein was engaged in sexual trafficking of underage girls. The victims said the bank ignored the warnings because it valued Epstein’s wealth and network.

The settlement amount is unknown but the New York Times said it is likely to be significantly higher than the $75 million settlement between Deutsche Bank and Epstein’s victims.

Domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski dies at 81

Ted Kaczynski, who murdered three people and injured over 20 others by sending bombs through the mail from 1978 to 1995, was found dead in his prison cell in North Carolina.

AP News reported that he committed suicide. He had late-stage cancer.

Kaczynski sent bombs to universities and airline companies from his simple cabin in rural Montana. Most of the bombs he sent did detonate and resulted in serious injuries to those who opened the packages. Law enforcement couldn’t figure out who the bomber was for a long time.

He was finally caught after his brother suspected that he was the bomber after reading a 35,000-word essay that he sent to media outlets. He was arrested at his cabin, where bomb components were found.

Kaczynski’s motive for bombing people was anger over technology and damage to the environment.

Trump indictment updates

The federal indictment of Donald Trump over his handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago was unsealed on Friday evening. Trump was charged with 37 counts in total. Most of the charges are on “willful retention of national defense information” and the remaining charges are conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding or concealing documents, scheming, and making false statements.

The indictment said Trump brought many classified documents from the White House to Mar-a-Lago and kept them in boxes in various locations at the resort, such as a ballroom, a bathroom and shower, an office space, and a storage room.

Some of classified information were about U.S. military and its weapons, nuclear programs, our vulnerabilities, or attack plans.

The indictment said Trump was warned several times by a federal agency that if he didn’t turn over classified documents, there would be a DOJ investigation.

When federal law enforcement started looking into the matter and issued a subpoena for the documents, Trump and an aide, Nauta, moved around boxes and files with classified information in them to conceal it from Trump’s own attorneys and the FBI.

The FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago in August 2022 resulted in the retrieval of over 100 classified documents and these are now used as evidence of alleged misconduct by Trump.

Trump has denied all wrongdoing and vowed that he would continue running for the presidency. He is due to appear in a federal court in Miami on Tuesday.

Djokovic wins French Open, has most grand slams

Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic won the French Open on Sunday and set a new men’s record for the most grand slam titles with 23.

Djokovic is now considered the most successful men’s tennis player of all time. CNN explained that he could have had the record broken earlier but was barred from playing in the Australian Open and US Open in 2022 due to his refusal to get the Covid-19 vaccine.
