January 15 top news briefs

Hello, it is Friday, January 15. Here are top news briefs.

President-elect Joe Biden proposed a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that he hopes Congress will pass when he takes over the presidency. Included in the package is a $1,400 direct payments and more generous unemployment benefits. The package provides $400 billion for vaccine deployment and to help schools reoopen safely. It provides $350 billion to help state and local governments. Biden said that it was a very expensive package but he said America can’t afford to do anything less.

Vice President Mike Pence called Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Thursday night to congratulate her and offer her support with the transition. Axios said President Trump has not spoken with President-elect Joe Biden. Pence and his wife, Karen, plans to attend the inauguration next week. President Trump will not attend and will leave the White House the morning of the inauguration.

Today a grim number was reached in the Covid-19 death toll -- two million dead worldwide. The U.S. is the hardest-hit country with almost 390,000 deaths. The next four leaders in death toll are Brazil, India, Mexico, and the U.K. CNN said the amount of deaths is equivalent to 10 large commercial jets with 500 people in it crashing on a daily basis for a year. We know that vaccines are on their way to turn the tide.

Here are some updates on the capitol riots. Federal prosecutors in Arizona said Jacob Chansley, who is one of the most photographed rioters because he was wearing a costume with horned headwear, should stay behind bars because there was strong evidence that the rioters intended to capture and assassinate elected officials in the U.S. government. However a few hours later, a D.C. federal prosecutor said they do not have direct evidence of “kill, capture teams.” The FBI investigation is wide-ranging and involves many states, so it seems like federal prosecutors in one area have different information from others in different areas. The Arizona prosecutor said Chansley wrote a threatening note to Pence when he climbed up on the Senate dias that said, “It’s only a matter of time, justice is coming.” An Air Force officer named Larry Rendall Brock, Jr., who had zip-tie handcuffs as he walked on the Senate floor, was arrested and accused of wanting to kidnap, restrain, and perhaps try and execute members of the U.S. government. So, these are very serious allegations. FBI said they expect that hundreds of people will be charged with varying crimes from breaking into the Capitol to murder to sedition.
