Pelosi’s husband attacked by man with hammer

This early morning, a 42-year-old man with a hammer broke into the San Francisco home belonging to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband Paul and shouted, “Where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?”

Nancy was not at home at the time, but Paul was. Police said they got an emergency call and when they arrived at the home, they saw the suspect and Paul both holding a hammer. The man pulled the hammer away and then violently assaulted Paul with it. The officers tackled the suspect and arrested him.

Paul sustained injuries to his head and body and was hospitalized. News reports said he is undergoing skull surgery. He is 82 years old.

Police said the suspect’s name is David DePape and that he is a resident of Berkeley. He will be charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and several additional felonies. Police did not provide a motive. News reports said DePape seemed to have struggled with mental health and previously made social media postings of right-wing conspiracy theories concerning vaccines or the 2020 election.

Top political leaders, both Democratic and Republican, expressed outrage at the incident and issued statements of support for the Pelosi family.

Mortgage rates over 7%

CNN reported that mortgage rates in the U.S. have topped 7% for the first time since 2002. The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is 7.08%. A year ago it was about 3.14%. This means that it is far more expensive to make monthly payments for a home purchase.

For example, a $300,000 home purchase with a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage would require monthly payments of about $2,000 a month with a 7% rate. Compared with a 3% rate, the payments would be about $1,300 a month. So there’s a big difference.

The fast increase in mortgage rates is largely influenced by the Federal Reserve’s hiking of interest rates in the hopes of cooling inflation. The higher costs are causing many potential homebuyers to wait to see if things change before they purchase a home. This may cause home prices to come down due to decreased demand.

6 children killed in murder-suicide at Oklahoma home

NBC News reported that six young children and two adults were found dead in a house in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma that was on fire on Thursday. When firefighters put out the fire, they found the deceased bodies inside. The children’s ages ranged from 1 to 13 years old.

The fire chief said they do not believe that any of the victims died from the fire. The police chief said they are investigating the two adults’ deaths as a murder-suicide. This may mean police believe that an adult killed the family and then killed themselves.

The identities of the deceased have not been released.

Putin says he won’t use nuclear weapons in Ukraine

Russian President Putin said on Thursday that he sees no need to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Putin said, “There is no point in that, neither political nor military.”

Putin said he suspects that Ukraine is planning to use a radioactive dirty bomb and then blame Russia for it. Ukraine has denied this and returned an accusation that Russia is saying this as a cover for their own potential plot to use a dirty bomb.

The U.S. Sec. Of Defense Austin said on Thursday that he has not seen anything that makes him think that Putin is going to use a dirty bomb.
