Hello! I’m Renca and I will take Alex’s place for today’s top news briefs. Today is Friday, June 4th. Ready to see the briefs?

It was recently announced that the U.S. employers added 559,000 jobs in May which is an improvement from April, but there is still a struggle. Right now we are still more than 7 million jobs short from where it was before the coronavirus hit. Employers are having a hard time hiring people. There are large chains such as Amazon, Wal Mart, Costco, and Chipotle that have raised their starting pay to attract more applicants. Most of the added jobs are mostly at restaurants and bars. Economists mentioned in the article that the recovery will be slow as there are many reasons why employers are having a hard time finding people to fill in such as the uncertainty to go back to a public-facing job so it will take time.

France is now opening their country to tourism again. Their government recently announced that vaccinated Europeans are welcome and do not need to take a coronavirus test. Countries outside of Europe such as the United States, are also welcome if you are vaccinated, but also have to show a negative test. Tourists will no longer need to quarantine upon arrival and no longer have to justify the reason for the trip to France. In the article, it mentioned that many tour guides are excited to resume touring business.

The NBA’s defending champion Los Angeles Lakers and its star player LeBron James was eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Phoenix Suns. This ends LeBron’s 14-0 winning record streak for the previous first rounds of the playoffs.

In Tokyo, Japan, the summer Olympics will be hosted there from July 23 to August 8. This was rescheduled as the Olympics were supposed to happen last summer. Just now about 10,000 Tokyo Olympics volunteers pulled out and caused some concerns among the community if Japan is ready to host or not. There are 80,000 registered volunteers already, but since that 10,000 pulled out, this leaves 70,000 ready. The chief executive of the Organizing Committee reassured the Japanese media that he does not believe the volunteer withdrawal will impact the operation of the games. There is no report on the reason why the volunteers pulled out, but it is highly suspected that it is related to the pandemic.

It is the season of cicadas. Billions of them are moving in the East coast and this year’s batch is known as Brood X. They have been dormant underground for the past 17 years. After 17 years, they tunnel up to the ground and turn into the winged phase, but their life span is 4 to 6 weeks.

When it’s cicada season, it’s also popular for people to turn them into food such as chocolate dipped cicadas, cicada tacos, and so forth. However, the Food and Drug Administration recently tweeted that if you are allergic to shellfish, do not eat cicadas as they have some relations to shrimp and lobsters. The experts said it is better to be safe than sorry.

If you are not allergic to shellfish and you want to try a cicada taco today, remember that you are eating something that is worth 17 years! I also ask the community, is there a sign for cicadas? If yes, comment below!

That’s all for now. See you later. Have a great weekend and don’t forget to stay with the light.
