Friday, April 9 top stories

It is Friday, April 9. Here are five of today’s top stories.

British Prince Philip passed away today at the age of 99 at Windsor Castle. He married Queen Elizabeth II and had four children. The Queen announced the death with “deep sorrow.” Their relationship spanned 73 years.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson offered his condolences to the Queen. He said Philip was one of the last surviving members of those who served in World War II and was an environmentalist long before it was popular.

Today a volcano erupted on St. Vincent, an island in the Caribbean Sea. CNN reported that ash plumes went 20,000 feet in the air and there was falling ash at an airport. St. Vincent is a part of the Grenadines island chain and authorities have declared a disaster alert and about 7,000 people are under evacuation orders.

On Thursday afternoon in Bryan, Texas (between Waco and Houston), a 27-year-old man named Larry Bollin opened fire at a cabinet manufacturing facility, killing one and injuring five. He fled the scene and then shot and injured a police officer before being arrested. Bollin was an employee at the cabinet business and is now in jail and charged with murder. The police officer is in serious but stable condition.

Earl Simmons, or DMX, has passed away at a hospital in White Plains, NY today at 50 years of age. He was in the hospital for a week after sustaining a heart attack and was dependent on life support machines. He had a very rough childhood and rose to fame in the 1990’s.

Fox News reported that a female Covid-19 patient in Japan successfully received a transplant of living lung tissue from his husband and son. This is the world’s first transplant of this kind. The woman’s lungs were severely damaged and was dependent on a life support machine that worked as an artificial lung for three months until her operation. Doctors said the operation took 11 hours. In the X-ray images, the first image further away from me is how the lungs looked before the surgery. All clouded up. The one closer to me is after the surgery, and you can see it’s cleared up. This kind of surgery is an option for Covid-19 patients because it can be hard to receive lung tissue from brain-dead donors.
