Deaf & DeafBlind people will be featured during Oscars

The Oscars awards will take place on Sunday, April 25 on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.

We can expect to see several Deaf and DeafBlind people to be featured during the awards show because of two films that have nominations: “Sound of Metal” and “Feeling Through.”

“Sound of Metal,” which is about a drummer who suddenly loses his hearing, has six nominations. The film features an ensemble of deaf actors but stars two hearing men (one of them a Coda) portraying deaf characters. Both actors, Riz Ahmed and Paul Raci, are nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actors. You can watch the film on Amazon.

“Feeling Through,” which is about a man’s life being impacted by a chance meeting with a DeafBlind man at a bus stop, is nominated for Best Live Action Short. The DeafBlind actor’s name is Robert Tarango and he is DeafBlind in real life. You can watch the film for free online.

Marlee Matlin will be one of the presenters during the Oscars awards. She is also an executive producer for “Feeling Through.” And of course, she won the Best Actress Oscar in 1987 for her role in “Children of a Lesser God,” so it’s a return to the Oscars for her.

Another film about disability that will be featured in the Oscars is “Crip Camp,” which is about a summer camp in 1971 for disabled teenagers, many who later on became activists and were instrumental in the disability rights movement that ultimately led to the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. The film is nominated for Best Documentary Feature. You can watch the film on Netflix.

We’ll see who wins the golden statues.
